Introduction to Croatian wines
Chamber of Commerce of Croatia
Croatia is a country which produces wine on a small scale. Its
varied climate conditions make it possible to produce wines of
diverse styles, from powerful reds, sourced from warm Mediterranean
locations, to refreshing, aromatic white wines from the cooler
mountain slopes. For centuries many indigenous varieties have been
adapting and thriving in this environment.
Zinfandel was born in this area; one of the parents (the mother)
of Chardonnay is a Croatian variety Belina, but still, the Croats
still prefer the indigenous grape varieties - Plavac Mali,
Graševina and Malvazija Istriana. Discover why.
What is it that makes Croatian wines so different and unique?
Why is the often misunderstood variety Welschriesling so
appreciated in Croatia under the name of Graševina? What does
Malvazija Istriana have in common with other Mediterranean
Malvasia, if anything? Why do Croatians prefer Plavac Mali over
Zinfandel?
Saša Špiranec, the author of the Guide to Croatian Wines, along
with UK wine writer Anthony Rose, will lead you through the tasting
of the main Croatian varieties.
